Catch Weight is a term commonly used in the food industry to represent the "approximate weight" of unprocessed products like meats or cheeses, where actual weights per case vary. These items are often sold by case but priced by weight (pounds), leading to dual units of measure: the inventory unit (Case) and the actual weight unit (LB). GoldFinch allows you to track both Case and LB inventory.
Setup Requirements
Before using the Catch Weight feature, ensure the following setups are completed.
Company Setup
-
Go to the App Launcher and select Company Setup.
-
Check the Enable Catch Weight field to activate this feature.
Numbering Series Setup
-
Since Catch Weight items are assigned serial numbers to link the Case unit of measure with the actual weight, you need to create a numbering series for these serial numbers.
-
From the App Launcher, select Numbering Series and create a new Serial Numbering Series record.
Item Setup
-
Check the Catch Weight field for each item that requires this functionality.
-
Assign the Serial Number Series created in the previous step to the item.
-
Enter a Catch Weight Tolerance % to define an acceptable variance for the conversion between Case and LB.
Units of Measure Setup
-
Create units of measure for the inventory UOM (Case) and the actual weight UOM (LB).
-
The conversion for LB will be set to "1", and the conversion for Case will reflect the approximate number of pounds per case (e.g., 80 pounds per case).
-
Define the actual weight UOM (LB) as the Base Unit of Measure, while the Inventory UOM (Case) should be used as the Sales and Purchase Units of Measure.
Purchase Order Process
Create a Purchase Order
-
Follow the standard process for creating a purchase order. When Catch Weight is enabled, you’ll see two new fields on the Purchase Lines: Qty. Base and Catch Weight.
-
The Unit Cost will reflect the base unit of measure (LB).
Create a Warehouse Receipt
-
Generate and post a Warehouse Receipt as usual.
-
When entering the lot for the items, also enter the serial numbers.
-
Click the Enter Receiving Lots button to populate 5 lines, each assigned a serial number and a quantity of 1.
-
Enter the Lot No. on the first line and click Copy Down the First Lot to apply it to all lines.
-
Adjust the Qty. Base to reflect the exact weight (LB) of each case.
Print Case Labels
-
Click Print Labels on the Warehouse Receipt to generate labels for each case, showing the serial and lot numbers.
Create a Purchase Invoice
-
The process for creating a purchase invoice remains the same, but for Catch Weight items, the Qty. Base and Unit Cost fields will reflect the actual weight.
Sales Process
Create Sales Order and Shipments
-
Follow the standard process for creating sales orders, warehouse shipments, and sales invoices. Similar to the purchase order process, the Qty. Base and Catch Weight fields will be visible.
-
The Unit Price will reflect the base unit of measure (LB).
Select Serial Numbers for Shipment
-
If your company does not use Pick Tickets, select the serial numbers by clicking Enter Shipping Lots in the Warehouse Shipment and look up each serial number.
-
If your company uses Pick Tickets, they will show both Qty. Base and Qty.
Packing Slip
-
The Packing Slip will display both the lot and serial numbers.
Item Adjustments
Create inventory adjustments using the standard process, but for Catch Weight items, you must enter the Lot and Serial Numbers:
Positive Adjustments
-
Lines will automatically populate with serial numbers and a quantity of 1.
-
Enter the Lot No. on the first line, then click Copy Down the First Lot to apply it to all lines.
-
Adjust the Qty. Base to reflect the exact weight for each case.
Negative Adjustments
-
Use the lookup to enter the Serial No. for each line and adjust the Qty. Base as needed.
Bin Content
When viewing bin content for Catch Weight items, the system will display Lot No., Serial No., Quantity, and Available Quantity in both the Case and Base UOMs, providing a clear view of inventory levels.
This Catch Weight feature ensures accurate tracking of both inventory units and weights, especially for products where weight variability is common.
